title.long
Title is longer than 60 characters. Level: Warning.
When it is raised
Raised when the resolved title is longer than 60 characters, counted as user-perceived characters (grapheme clusters), so an emoji or a flag counts as one. The title measured is the first non-empty value of og:title, then twitter:title, then <title>; a long <title> is not measured when a non-empty og:title is set. Only the first og:title tag that has a content attribute is read; if its content is empty or whitespace, that tag counts as absent even when a later og:title has a value, and the title comes from twitter:title or <title> instead.
What it does to a shared link
The API treats 60 characters as the safe length for a card title. It reports the length and does not shorten or change the title it found.
How to fix it
- Shorten the title that wins, normally og:title, to 60 characters or fewer.
- Put the most specific words first so the page is still identifiable from the opening words.
- Keep a longer <title> for browser tabs and search if you want one; the API measures og:title when it is present and non-empty.
