description.twitter-only

Description comes from twitter:description. Level: Warning.

When it is raised

Raised when the description comes from twitter:description because the page has no og:description with a non-empty value. Only the first og:description tag that has a content attribute is read; if its content is empty or whitespace, the tag counts as absent even when a later og:description has a value. It is raised whether or not the page also has a <meta name="description"> tag, since twitter:description takes precedence over it in the API's lookup.

What it does to a shared link

Platforms that read og:description find no summary text in that tag. Facebook, LinkedIn and WhatsApp document og:description as the description tag, and their documentation does not mention twitter:* tags. X's Cards documentation, since withdrawn, described X reading twitter:* tags and falling back to og:*.

How to fix it

  1. Add an og:description tag with the same text as twitter:description.
  2. The existing twitter:description tag can stay, carrying the same text or a different one.
<meta property="og:description" content="A one- or two-sentence summary of what this page offers the reader, written to fall between 100 and 200 characters."> <meta name="twitter:description" content="A one- or two-sentence summary of what this page offers the reader, written to fall between 100 and 200 characters.">
