url.other-path

og:url points to a different page. Level: Tip.

When it is raised

Raised when og:url is on the same host as the page's final URL, after redirects, but names a different path. Only the pathname is compared, so the query string and fragment are ignored. Each path is decoded with decodeURI, which leaves reserved escapes such as %2F and %3F encoded; if decoding fails, the path is compared as written. One trailing slash, or one trailing /index.html or /index.htm, is then removed from each side, and an empty result counts as /. The comparison is case-sensitive, including the index.html match, so /INDEX.HTML is kept.

What it does to a shared link

The card names another page on the same host as its canonical address. This is often deliberate, for example when several locale variants of a page all declare one canonical page.

How to fix it

  1. If the page should be its own canonical address, set og:url to the page's own URL.
  2. If the other page is intended as the canonical one, no change is needed.
  3. Check the path of the page's final URL, after redirects: that is the address the comparison uses.
