format.avif

Image is AVIF. Level: Tip.

When it is raised

Raised when the card image loads and its Content-Type header, with any parameters removed and lowercased, is exactly image/avif. The format is judged from the Content-Type header, not from the file's bytes.

What it does to a shared link

A client that does not decode AVIF cannot show the image, and the card appears without it. The API reads dimensions only from PNG, GIF, JPEG and WebP files, so the dimension, aspect-ratio, crop and declared-size mismatch checks do not run on an AVIF image, and the transparency checks do not examine it. The file-size checks still run.

How to fix it

  1. Export the card image as PNG or JPEG.
  2. Point og:image (and twitter:image, if the page sets it) at the new file.
  3. Serve the file with the matching Content-Type header, image/png or image/jpeg.
  4. Give the new file a new URL so cached copies of the AVIF card are not reused.
