image.unversioned

Image URL is unversioned. Level: Tip.

When it is raised

Raised when the image loads, its URL is not signed, and the URL has no query string and no digit anywhere in its path. Digits in the hostname do not count. A URL ending in a bare ? has an empty query and counts as having none. A URL that cannot be parsed is not reported.

What it does to a shared link

Replacing the file at the same URL leaves the URL unchanged. A cache keyed on the URL can keep serving the old file until its copy expires.

How to fix it

  1. Put a version in the image URL that changes whenever the picture does: any query string such as ?v=2, or a number, or a hash containing digits, in the path.
  2. Update og:image (and twitter:image, if set) to the new URL each time the image changes.
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/card.png?v=2">
